Software FAQs

Pricing & Costs

How much does custom software development cost?

The software licenses run separately from Toughjobs' work: entry platforms (Jobber, Housecall Pro) run $50–$200/user/month, mid-market (ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, Service Fusion) runs $200–$400/user/month, and enterprise/custom runs $400+/user/month. Toughjobs setup and configuration is $3,500–$12,000 one-time, and ongoing optimization and training runs $500–$1,500/month.

What factors determine the price of a software project?

Which platform tier fits your fleet size (1–5 trucks vs. 5–30 vs. multi-location), how much workflow customization and price-book building is needed, and how much team training and marketing integration is in scope.

Do you offer fixed-price, milestone-based, or time-and-materials billing?

Setup and configuration is priced as a one-time project ($3,500–$12,000); ongoing optimization and training runs as a monthly retainer ($500–$1,500/mo) on top of it.

Are hosting, third-party services, licenses, maintenance, and support additional costs?

Yes — the software platform's own subscription (per user, per month) is billed directly by that platform, separate from Toughjobs' setup and ongoing optimization fees.

Service Areas

Where do you provide software development services?

Toughjobs sets up and configures field service software for trade contractors across the Midwest.

Can the entire software project be completed remotely?

Yes — platform configuration, workflow building, and training can all be run remotely, with on-site support scoped where useful for a specific rollout.

Timeline & Completion

How long does implementation take?

A clean setup for a small shop takes 3–4 weeks. Mid-market platforms with full price book, memberships, and integrations run 6–10 weeks. Enterprise builds can be 3–6 months. Rushing this is how you end up abandoning the software six months later.

What can delay a software project?

Rushing the setup is the most common cause of problems — skipping proper workflow configuration or team training is how contractors end up abandoning a platform six months after buying it.

How soon can you start my software implementation?

Most implementations kick off within 1–2 weeks of signing. Exact start date depends on current workload — we will give you a real date on the strategy call, not a placeholder.*

* Estimated. Current workload and holiday scheduling can shift these dates — we'll confirm exact timing on your call.

Getting Started

How do I get started with a software project?

Talk to us about your current setup — whether that's the wrong platform for your trade, an underused platform, or no real system at all.

Can you improve, replace, or finish software built by another developer?

Yes — we can switch platforms without losing your customer data, migrating customers, equipment history, open jobs, and accounting records, with some cleanup expected but no lost book of business.

Can you audit an existing application before recommending changes?

Yes — the same audit pattern applies whether you're overpaying for an enterprise platform you barely use or running your office out of a spreadsheet. We diagnose whether the platform, the workflow configuration, or the training is the actual problem before recommending a change.

What's Included

What is included with your software development service?

Platform selection, workflow build, price book setup, team training, and marketing integration — wiring the platform into scheduling and dispatch, invoicing and payments, customer history and communication, and reporting and KPIs.

Will you configure hosting, monitoring, analytics, and backups?

Reporting dashboards (close rate by tech, average ticket by job type, revenue per truck per day, lead source ROI) are built as part of setup so you're looking at real numbers every Monday, not guessing.

Are user training and technical documentation included?

Yes — team training is part of the one-time setup fee, with ongoing new-hire training available through the monthly optimization retainer.

Who It's For

What types of businesses and software projects do you support?

Trade contractors from 1-truck shops up through multi-location operations — the platform recommendation follows your team size, revenue, and how much reporting you actually need.

Can you support an established business with legacy software?

Yes — switching platforms without losing customer data (customers, equipment history, open jobs, accounting records) is a standard part of the work.

Our Process

What's the biggest mistake contractors make?

Buying the biggest platform they can afford and assuming it'll fix operational problems on its own. Software amplifies whatever process you already have. If your process is a mess, expensive software just makes an expensive mess. Fix the workflow first, then automate it.

What does your software development process involve?

Platform selection matched to your trade, size, and revenue; a workflow build covering job types, capacity rules, and drive-time buffers; price book configuration; team training; and marketing integration so leads and jobs flow through one system.

How do you test the software before launch?

Configuration is validated against your actual dispatch, invoicing, and reporting needs before rollout — the dispatch board specifically is tuned with job types and capacity rules so the team trusts it instead of keeping a paper backup.

What happens during deployment and launch?

Team training happens as part of the rollout, since adoption — not the software itself — is 70% of whether the system actually works.

Requirements & Preparation

Who from my business should participate in planning, testing, and approvals?

Whoever runs dispatch day to day, since the configuration is built around how your specific techs and jobs actually flow — not a generic template.

How should existing data be prepared for migration?

Customers, equipment history, open jobs, and accounting records are mapped and migrated as part of a platform switch, with some manual cleanup typically needed on messy or inconsistent records.

Customization & Options

Which platform is best for my trade?

Depends on size and complexity. Jobber and Housecall Pro are strong under 5 trucks. ServiceTitan dominates HVAC and plumbing above 5 trucks but is overkill for a solo operator. FieldEdge is a solid middle ground. We match the platform to your team size, revenue, and how much reporting you actually need — not to whoever's paying the biggest referral fee.

Will the software be customized for my workflows and users?

Yes — job types, capacity rules, drive-time buffers, price book, and reporting dashboards are all configured around your actual operation, not left at platform defaults.

Can you build web, mobile, desktop, cloud, or internal applications?

The core service is configuring established field service platforms (Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, Service Fusion) rather than building custom software from scratch.

Results & Expectations

How do you evaluate usability, reliability, speed, and scalability?

Through the reporting layer — close rate by tech, average ticket by job type, revenue per truck per day, membership conversion, and lead source ROI. If those numbers aren't pullable in under a minute, the setup isn't working.

What happens if users discover problems after launch?

Ongoing optimization and training ($500–$1,500/mo) covers monthly tune-ups, new-hire training, reporting reviews, and integration maintenance after the initial rollout.

Ownership & Access

Will I have access to the source-code repository, hosting, databases, and deployment accounts?

You own your platform account and data directly with the software vendor — Toughjobs configures it, but the account itself is yours.

What happens to the software and source code if I end the relationship?

You keep your platform subscription and data — it's your account with the vendor, not something tied to continuing with Toughjobs.

Platforms & Integrations

Can we switch platforms without losing customer data?

Yes, in almost every case. We handle data mapping and migration of customers, equipment history, open jobs, and accounting records. There's always some cleanup, but you don't lose your book of business.

Do we really need to integrate software with marketing?

If you want to know which ads, keywords, and campaigns actually produce revenue — yes. Otherwise you're spending marketing dollars blind. Call tracking, form tracking, and lead-source tagging inside the CRM turn marketing from a cost center into a measurable investment.

Which platforms do you support?

Entry-level (Jobber, Housecall Pro), mid-market (ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, Service Fusion), and enterprise/custom builds (ServiceTitan Enterprise and similar) — matched to your fleet size and reporting needs, not whichever pays the biggest referral fee.

Can the software integrate with my CRM, accounting, payment, scheduling, or other systems?

Yes — marketing integration is part of setup, so call tracking, form tracking, and lead-source tagging inside the CRM turn marketing spend into something measurable instead of guesswork.

Can you migrate data from my current software?

Yes, in almost every case — customers, equipment history, open jobs, and accounting records are mapped and migrated, with some cleanup expected but no lost book of business.

Support & Maintenance

Do you provide software maintenance and technical support after launch?

Yes — ongoing optimization and training ($500–$1,500/mo) covers monthly tune-ups, new-hire training, reporting reviews, and integration maintenance.

Are bug fixes, upgrades, monitoring, and backups included?

Platform-level updates and backups are handled by the software vendor itself; Toughjobs' ongoing retainer covers configuration tune-ups, training, and integration maintenance on top of that.

Policies & Guarantees

What happens if a milestone is delayed or not approved?

Rushing implementation is explicitly what we try to avoid — a clean setup takes the time it takes (3–4 weeks for a small shop, longer for mid-market and enterprise), because a rushed rollout is how contractors end up abandoning the platform months later.
